The Dolomites are known as the "Pale Mountains" and are over 250 million years old. They cover a total land mass of about 1,419 square kilometers.
In this region, five dialects make up the ancient Ladin language. It is spoken today by approximately 30,000 people in the following five valleys: Val Badia, Val Gardena, Val di Fassa, Livinallongo and Ampezzo.
Throughout time, dolomite rock has commonly been used in antacids, as a base for toothpaste, calcium supplements for animals and humans, and even ceramic glazes!
The Dolomites, a distinctive mountain range in Northeastern Italy, are classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. You’ll find some of the most beautiful mountain landscapes in the world here, with dramatic pale-colored peaks which contrast with the rich forests and meadows below. This blend of beauty in The Dolomites applies to their cuisine as well. A unique cooking style mixes Italian with Austrian, and Ladin Mountain influences. Visitors are sure to have a one of a kind culinary experience in this one of a kind location.
Where We Would Stay: Rosa Alpina Hotel & Spa
The Hotel exudes an atmosphere of serenity, located in front of a small church built in the 1600's with bright frescoes painted on the facade. It is near several shops full of local products such as smoked speck ham and strudels. There are several restaurants within the hotel, each with it's own unique style and atmosphere. In the discreet and charming ambiance of the St. Hubertus, just awarded its Third Michelin Star, chef Norbert Niederkofler takes the time to advise each guest in person on their dining selections. This kind of customization creates dishes that are as unique as each individual guest! In the "Limonaia" Restaurant, you will find a menu with Mediterranean specialties, pasta dishes, and fresh fish, which is delivered daily from Chioggia, near Venice. The "Fondue Stube" is a separate little room in the "Limonaia" Restaurant, where they serve both Swiss fondue and traditional fondue. Additionally, their Restaurant Wine Bar & Grill serves a pizza cooked in a wood oven fire that has become the famous favorite of locals and visitors alike!
